It’s probably best to speak with your neighbors to find someone who works in your neighborhood. Does your block have an email list/Google Group/list serve, etc.?

Its hard. Its hard to find people with the talent whom we can trust. A lot of handy persons do it for a while and disappear because of the expenses with running a vehicle for a very small business and the associated self employment costs. I do it with relation to doors because i can charge what i need to support a business. But if people were asking me to spackle walls and put a toilet seat on and hang a picture, they would think i am overcharging.

See if you can find a neighborhood person who maybe has other employ. Dont ask them to travel too far and carry a boat load of tools and you may find somebody. My guess is areas like bed stuy, crown heights and bushwick may have talent who still work this way within the community. Places like park slope or the heights, less so. Keep in mind with self employed people, once they hit a certain point in revenue and exposure they are really contractors and at that point a lot changes, cost wise.
