How to seal the chimney to prevent soot from entering the house?
Hi, you will need to add a chimney cap at the top to prevent weathering from rain and snow. However the old chimnet lining, a cement-like surface may simply be crumbling and will continue to fall. You could simply add a damper at the top of each firebox. This would catch and contain any debris that continues to fall.

I’m interested in sealing the chimneys inside my decorative fireplaces. Does anyone know how to do that? Or if there is another way to prevent chimney soot from traveling down and entering the house? Not only is it a mess, but there are kids and it’s not ideal to have them breathing this stuff. Thanks for any suggestions.

A piece of sheet aluminum, available cheaply in rolls, and cuttable with heavy scissors, placed over the flue opening would do the trick. It could be attached with silicone caulk and would be easy to remove, if that ever became necessary.

And a similar sheet in the damper area along with some fiberglass insulation and that should atop the soot.

Think the solution already offered is great , reasonable, and inexpensive.

stuff fiberglass insulation into a garbage bag, then shove it up above the fireplace opening. This also helps keep cold air from falling down the chimney and into your house
