Y’all, We have a pretty standard door with three glass panes which arch on top and rectangular on the bottom. I managed to shatter one of the panes. I do not know how to replace it. (a) the pane is not rectangular so I cannot order it. and (b) the pane was not attached with the thin strips of wood, but instead, it sits in the slot in the wood, and to replace it looks like we will need to take the wooden frame apart.

So I need to hire a professional. If it is at all doable. Can someone recommend one?

Also, can the glass be replaced with a shatterproof one?

Check the inside and see if you can remove trim. Nails may be hidden.

Beginning about 1920, modern machines allowed them to make doors and assemble them around the panels and glass. If this is the case here, you will have to cut the inside trim out, but in truth, that molding may be removable. Try to move it carefully. If you can pull the trim and remove the glass, you can make a template and bring it to a glass person.

Here is an issue. The old glass was not safety glass. It was plain old thin glass. Now you need safety glass. I use 1/4 lami because it is strong. But it is thick. Thicker than the old glass. So the molding will protrude on the back. If you wish, you can order tempered glass, but you have to have it cut to that shape first and then tempered. YOU do not have to do that as a homeowner, but a glass person must install lami or tempered. You can install plain old glass though it won’t meet code.

That door is not too old. I suspect under layers of paint, you will find removable trim inside.

There used to be a really good glass shop on 5th ave up by flatbush. The closed the shop but in so far as I know, the business is still around for service calls.

where the molding meets the door. if you can sort of jimmy a chisel in there and wedge it a little, you might see paint separate a little more than the width of the chisel and that is telling you the molding is not part of the door itself.

you guys are awesome. I used a heat gun to lift the paint and found the molding and the small staples they were attached with.
I put some packaging tape on the remaining piece of the glass so I can bring it to the glass specialists.

if you are by ridgewood, take it to Al at Major Lock and glass.

there is bear glass down by Greenwood cemetary. i have brought larger jobs, sand blasting to them.

and down off ocean parkway there is a place called Major Glass. i have never used them.

FWIW I used Bear Glass to replace broken patterned glass in my ground floor outer door. I couldn’t match the original, but found something that seemed appropriate. It takes quite a while because they send out the glass you select to be tempered.

My understanding from my glass guy is that wired glass has been outlawed in nys. But I just checked and, quick, and there is conflicting language.

My understanding is that once it was outlawed in doors, which is where it had been used most often, it was reintroduced as a sort of specialty product at a lot more cost.

I am not certain of all of this. I had an inquiry some months back and called my glass person and that was what he told me. The next time I talk to him, I will revisit this topic.

OP, not sure if I said it above, tempered will allow you to keep the current thickness. It is the lami that is thick, 1/4″.
