How to prune rose bushes this year?
Hi all, With the early “spring” and unclear timeline for when cold weather will subside for good, how are you planning to trim your rose (and other) bushes? I did not prune ours at the beginning of last winter (bad me) and they have started to show signs of green growth. What do I do? Is it too late to prune now? Do I wait for a cold weather spell? How are you all dealing with this strange winter? Thank you!

Last year, we didn’t have time to prune the roses in the fall, and in the spring we decided not to touch, because kidneys appeared. And this wasn’t a good decision – the bushes grew very much, lost their neat appearance.

Yes, pruning roses right after Valentine’s day is a good way to remember, but it’s not too late. Take out any old dead canes, remove broken or crossing branches and cut 1/4 inch above outward facing buds all round. Contact me if you should need further garden work jessica@rootandstalk.com

Agree on the go ahead and prune now so you get the shape you want. Especially getting rid of old and dead canes. I only have a climber now but when I had tea roses I would prune back in February so a few weeks into March isn’t bad. I love the book The Pruner’s Bible as a reference.

Go ahead & prune them now. They will then grow & adjust to their new shape rather than putting in the effort to grow in directions that you do not want.
Roses are resilient.

I managed to time it well (or too early). If I hadn’t already, I’d still cut out dead and old canes, and prune smaller stems as normal. Caveat #1- I’m an amateur and #2 I’ve got mostly hardy climbers.
