How to prevent garbage can theft?

In a matter of several weeks, one lid and one garbage can and lid were stolen from the front of my building.
I previously had secured the lid to the can by zip ties then rope but kept breaking. Other than painting my address on that cans and lid, I didn’t have any anti theft measures on them.
What methods have people used to prevent garbage can theft?
What semi permanent fasteners can I use to attach lid to can and can to building?

Are you near a park? After a good snow, those of us near parks see a lot of lids go to people stealing them to use as sleds.

I drilled an eye round into the ground then secured the garbage cans with chains and a lock. I can’t wheel the cans out on garbage day but it prevents theft.
