How to install AC units with ground floor window bars?
Thanks Resident2. The space between the window and bars is only 5.75 inches and I haven’t found any ACs that small to fit. The rooms are too small for standing units. Any ideas where to find?
Thanks cmu. That is an interesting approach. Can you recommend an iron worker? So in the summer, the gate on the window bars was just pushed out?
Thanks a lot, again!

We need to accommodate some AC units on the garden floor of our brownstone. Seeking advice on how people are dealing with this now? Brownstoner posts from 2008 show some possible shallow AC units that could work, but are these still available? Adjusting the bars to fit an A/C box seems to be the other option. Can anyone recommend a company that can do this type of iron work for a reasonable price? Any other ideas? Thank you!

The best option is to look for a shallow air conditioner. There are many out there, it is just tedious to go through all the spec sheets for each one.
Changing the window bars will always look off and finding an iron person that does clean as well as solid work is difficult for a small job.

I had ironworkers cut a section of the bars and reinstall as a “gate” which swings open to install the a/c. When the a/c is removed, a padlock keeps the gate secure. This was 15 years ago and imsr was quite inexpensive.
