Make sure ALL radiator valve handles in the steam system are turned 100% on/open/counter-clockwise or 100% off/closed/clockwise. Sometimes people think partially open/closed governs partial heat. It doesn’t. It creates water hammer noise. Sometimes people are not so diligent to turn that last half a turn open/closed. Double checking may save you unneeded plumbing service

to what master plumber is saying. when we bought this house, everything was fine. when i removed the radiators to screen the floors, i noticed that the floor by the radiator in one room had been previously opened and reclosed by a former owner. i put the radiator back and put the heat on. it banged. i tilted the radiator back toward the valve. it still banged. the issue is not the radiator but is something with the pipe in the floor. we valved it off and my plan is to leave it for the next owner of this house to deal with.

Banging is, practically speaking, never that. It’s most often a failure of the main delivery network. The noises can be heard higher in the building but it’s usually because water is being thrown around up there where only steam should be.
