How I finally dealt (and maybe won) with my professional musician neighbor
Some time ago I asked here if anyone had any suggestion how to deal with a professional musician neighbor who has been practicing all the time. Sound proofing (estimate $40-50k) wasn’t really going to work because of how our houses are attached. The consensus was that this was part of city living. But it has made me insane. I have dealt with this for years as the practice sessions have gone from 3-4 hours per day to TEN TO TWELVE hours per day. (obviously not nonstop but, all freaking day and night). We had spoken with him many times, asked him to curtail his practice time, asked if he could please get a rehearsal space or soundproof. Nada. Last week I lost it with him. After 12 hours, at 10:30PM, I stood outside his window and said “THIS IS SO F*&#ING OUTRAGEOUS. I’m getting a lawyer and I am going to F*&#ING figure out how to litigate this. I AM DONE” Well holy heck, not a peep this week. And I know he’s not out on tour because I see him every day. I think he knows I am insane enough to hire a lawyer to figure out some way to shut it down. Maybe I am jinxing myse lf but…I do believe he did finally get a rehearsal space. To everyone else dealing with this…if reason doesn’t work, maybe this is the way to go. It’s worth whatever it would cost me to bring this to court at this point. It would be less expensive than selling our house. Fingers crossed it doesn’t come to that. But oh my goodness…the sound of silence.
