how do porcelain rosettes for porcelain knobs work?

The people at 5th Avenue Key Shop helped me with a piece of door hardware from my 1899 house when a shaft broke leaving the end stuck inside the brass knob. It was nothing like the OP’s porcelain hardware, but this store has been in business for nearly a hundred years and they’ve VERY knowledgeable. They’re actually on the north side of 9th Street, just west of 5th Avenue in Park Slope.

after stripping many layers of paint from my door hardware, i was pleasantly surprised to see that most of them are porcelain. however, i have no idea how to take the back plate off the rosettes so that they can be attached to the door. has anyone dealt with this? i’m attaching pictures. thank you. but the mechanism is different (3rd picture). I tried to screw that back plate off but I can’t seem to turn it and I’m afraid I’ll break it.

Hey vard, thank you for the plug but I do not know. I know a guy out on the east end with a bunch of this kind of hardware and if I see him over Thanksgiving, I will ask.

Doorsbythetinkers… and stevecym are the same.

Another option is to email Olde Good Things or take it to the store. https://ogtstore.com/antique-store-nyc/

You might want to read about Olde Good Things connections before deciding to patronize them. For example:

Thanks for sharing Bob. I wasn’t aware of all this sordid history. Anyway when I had a hardware issue, they found and gave me the screws.

Eman is correct. I have the porcelain rosettes in my house also. The brass ferrule screws onto the iron back plate so yours is probably just a bit rusted and stuck. Maybe try some WD40 and a little heat. On my doors I tend to have the opposite problem – the brass piece is loose and wont screw on because the threads are stripped. I haven’t seen those ferrule pieces for sale anywhere.

I do not go for wd 40 in these situations and I have cans of it here. I dont think of it as the kind of super thin lubricant that will travel into fine, tight threads. Years ago, liquid wrench. Now, PB blaster. And even those I wonder how much of their product success is more about marketing.

Also, the old men used to say heat something, like with a propane torch, and then apply the liquid wrench and as it cools it will draw the liquid wrench into the threads. Not sure how true that is either. But it was a common thing old men said around a shop.

thank you for that. i also know someone who relied a lot on CRC and he kind of scoffed at the wd 40 thing. i never relied on crc because there was so many different ones that i was not sure which was right for this sort of thing. i think the man i knew used 5-56.

i did a bit of reading about this last night. i was more or less trying to figure out if the heat would act as something to draw the chemical in as it cooled. i could not find the answer to that but:

some people used to use bees wax or sealing wax to free rusted parts. first they said to heat it and the heat expands the nut (or in this case collar) more than it does for the bolt and that breaks the bond between the two. people would then put wax on it and yes, as it cooled the wax would draw into the thread. they said to not use “dripless” candle wax as the same thing that makes it dripless also makes it harder to apply this trick.

doorsby and stevecym are one and the same.

Probably sold @Olde Good things. But now I can’t go there after what Bob posted. Maybe call OGT and get some advice.

vard01–You have my permission to go IF you’re really desperate, despite my aversion to the cult behind OGT—just don’t make a habit of it 🙂

Thanks Bob, I have no need to go there anymore because I realized the hard way vintage hardware is a challenge. If you only have a knob, it becomes hard to find all the parts that complement it. I have no aversion to calling and asking them for hardware tips which is what I’d advise OP to do. Some of the people that work there are knowledgeable.
