I’m not suggesting s/he do it himself, because someone who is asking this question probably doesn’t have the tools or skills to do it. Someone who did would probably now to just have home depot drop off the unit and pick up the old one. It is not like running a new gas line or something and is likely within the ability of many homeowners, but if you have to ask you probably shouldn’t try it.

urbandad, i like what you are suggesting. that they will not file the forms. and yes, if this were my house i would do this myself. but most people should be calling their own plumber. someone they are paying. i would not trust the guy Home Depot brings in – maybe he is some bozo at the other extreme who wants it all done right back to the street and opens an 80 year old can of worms at least by using the licensed plumber, the responsibility is off the shoulders of the homeowner, even if something is not done correct.

what gennady has said about this for simple appliance installs has the potential to expose a lot of homeowners to issues with 80 year old dryer and stove lines that were never filed and have been fine all along.

I doubt most plumbers will file the OPW forms, there’s a cost to filing the form monthly and can be headaches with the paperwork. Perhaps cover from the gas rules might be a reason to do it? Realistically a bozo can hook up a dryer connector. Personally, I’d rather do it myself than have a bozo do it. I’ve seen an install by a licensed plumber where the vent detached from the wall and vent into the room. Didn’t trigger the CO alarm, but it was quite noticeable, much worse than running all 4 burners on the stove which is more btus. So what I did was I hooked up the vent properly. A licensed job doesn’t mean a good job unfortunately. Highly doubtful they will run a hard duct or side vent the dryer, or even use quality parts.

Work must be performed by a licensed plumbing contractor, but no permit , no inspection needed. Fees must be paid and dob must be notified in writing. New gas regulations contradict it, and requires that plumber or his employees must have gas qualifications to operate appliance gas valve, but dob plans to change it ASAP.

so Gennady: The “ordinary plumbing work” clause does not sound like it has to be filed and inspected per se, just that the plumber must have a record of such jobs and file that record, monthly? it does not indicate that an inspector is going to come out; it sounds more like they are counting on the licensed plumber to perform the job properly and self inspect. they are not making a “job” out of swapping out an appliance. which helps as now we don’t have to worry about letting the DOB into the house and yes, instead of hiring bozos, we can all pay the $300 and have the plumber do it.

So correct boo. Yet the city encourages these bozos to exist. I pointed out on here a few weeks back that nyc is the only jurisdiction out of all the surrounding ones that allow HIC’s to operate without liability insurance. If they required all hic’s to carry liability, many of them, the most unfit, would leave the business and bag groceries, flip hamburgers, or pick fruit someplace. The city encourages a lot of the bad actors with it’s own lax regulations.

see what Gennady says. “Must be filed and inspected”. if this is true, and i cannot see how it is for the $300 and something PC and HD charge, this can open a can of worms for a lot of people. it makes sense that a new gas line to the appliance, where none had been before requires inspection. but the line from the valve to the appliance? the flex line? here is the problem with that – we are inviting the DOB into our houses because we need a stove or dryer and now the DOB will be looking at a gas line that might have been snuck in 30 or even 50 years ago and now they will tell us that gas line is illegal and will have to be redone. so a new stove or dryer ends up costing thousands.

so, my experience with PC was so good over the summer (and has been other times) that i just called the salesperson who helped me that day. His name is Allam and he works at the Forest Hills PC Richard. he told me he can take orders over the phone for anything in the 5 boros and have it delivered. he told me i can post his cell number here: 917-399-9698. the store number is 718-896-0400.

the sales people at PC RIchard are far more concerned with the entire customer experience. Home Depot simply wants to make the sale and they are so big they don’t give a hoot about complaints.

i just called both PC Richard and HD just to see if HD would give me inaccurate info. for both i called a call center, not a local store. both told me they had a 300 plus connection charge and PC told me why” they need a licensed plumber to do it. PC also told me they would get a cert of insurance for the building if needed. i was really hoping HD would give me some nonsense just so i can deride them, but it seems that there system is now set up to catch this by zip code and when i pressed them on why the 300 plus charge they said “it is gas, it is not a simple install” .

in truth, i would go to PC Richard. Not just because i hate HD. in June we needed a new AC unit and i called PC Richard. the sales guy at the Forest Hills store comes on, fully professional and behaving like the customer is the most important thing in his day. He talks to me for a minute, gets my order and tells me it will be at the front of the store for curbside pickup. 15 minutes later i arrive, AC units are stacked in the door way and a guy with a hand truck grabs mine and puts it in my trunk. it was easier than going to the drive up window at mcdonalds. NO WAY can home depot make anything this simple.

Was just shopping for gas dryer on their website and they are at least offering install at around $375 online. We’re getting our own plumber to install so won’t be able to test it.

Would love to see them charge someone for install then renege, but totally believe they would!

Even on the phone when ordering from HD they’ll tell you they do the installation but they do not & it’d be illegal for them to do it.
