Hoarder landlord?
Hey yall – question for you
We just moved into a new place that by many standards is amazing, but there’s a couple of things that are getting under our skin a bit.
Our landlord likes to keep items in the ground floor hallway – at first it seemed temporary when we were looking at the place, but as every day passes, we’re starting to realize this might be its de-facto placement. These items include a couch stood up on its side, a couple of large barrels, and lots of used wood and construction materials. Items do extend above a normal head height and could easily be a falling hazard – having seen the basement as well, we’re worried we may have signed a lease with a hoarder.
Im SURE there are some firecode violations happening here, but unsure how to broach this with her in an amicable way, and also unsure how to proceed if we want to report the issue
Interested in advice, similar stories, suggestions…. Really anything other than “should have thought of that before you signed”…. Because that I know now.
Thanks!

Required exits should be kept clear. I wouldn’t threaten the landlord, but perhaps make her aware that she could get a violation from DOB or have her insurance cancelled for this. Say, “hey I wouldn’t want you to get a fine from the city, or be on the hook if there was a fire and someone got hurt. How can I help you get this hallway clear?”

thanks to both of the above replies – its on our list of things to bring up with her after some more immediate repairs, and she definitely falls in the well intentioned ‘giving it to a good home’ group – just concerned overall about safety and usability in the hall ways. we had to move the couch out of the hallway to move in, and then move it back when we were done (sigh)

Many people who collect things do so because they feel the item is useful but they just don’t have a current use for it. They love finding a good home for it and welcome “giving it to a good home”. If your landlord is one of these people you could suggest giving some of the stuff to Big Reuse or another such place that would resell it. Tell your landlord how you know of a place that will sell their stuff to people who will really appreciate it and the money will go to a good cause. Facilitating the change of possession of the objects is the easiest way of getting them to let go. Not all people who accumulate things can let go….and there is really little you can do but to find another place or live with it.

First step is communication, talk with the landlord about it. Could be that it’s just something on there to do list that they are procrastinating on.
