Hinges
I am restoring an entrance door in Bed-Stuy the hinges on the exterior door art 5 x 2 3/4″. I need to replace a cracked one but would do them all if I could find good hinges.I can not find the correct size anywhere. Anyone have a lead? rebholution: when i first revealed how we deal with this issue, by cutting the hinges, i was opening the door for you to say “how do i get you to do that?” i do run a business. i do not like to hard sell people, but i do sometimes open the door a little and leave it open. i work out of my house, so i cannot have the world and their brother showing up here, but if someone finds there way to me, i try to accommodate them, if only because they are taking an interest in what i do. i also stock some stuff here but mostly for customers whom i am doing actual work for.

i just looked at those hinges. they are going to be a lot lighter; thinner metal and thinner pin (they are hardware hinges not real door hinges). when you apply these, they will not work as well as the bulky hinges you have. you might get away with it, but i could never install that and bill a customer. you would be better to take a full size hinge that aligns with the others and cut the leaves of it.

i have to follow that link. we go through this here a lot as we have to work on these and some of the iron ones are always cracked. now you have to be careful, the new ones may not swing on the same axis.

@rg & green thinker:
these doors are not mounted in the traditional sense, inset in the frame. they are mounted behind the frame with the open hinge sitting flat on the back of the frame with the open cut of the mortise facing to the exterior (opposite of the way the mortise opening faces in traditionally mounted doors). this style of mounting is prevalent from Clinton Hill east into Bed Sty and the western area of Bushwick.
it is an easy way to mount a door with the screws placed well into the wide part of the casement and in the door mortise.
still curious as to why it was done in the past and why it is only in certain neighborhoods of NYC.
for those suggesting a decorative hinge would be advantageous, in this situation that is very true as the flat part of the hinges are continuously exposed when the door is closed. unfortunately, sometimes the entry is not wide enough to enable people to see them as they may be mounted only a few inches from the wall.

@RG For such a thick door, i feel like the hinges should be inset even more, those 2 first columns of screws seem too close to the edge.

Some of the “old original” hinges have a 1/2″-3/4″ decorative band on the back. I assume it is intended to be exposed, and in that case, you can install wider hinges and expose the decorative band. what you are looking for is termed a “Narrow” hinge. that is a hinge that is taller than it is wide. A hinge wider than it is tall is a “broad” hinge. i learned these terms tonight looking in an old hardware catalog. as of 1916, Stanley was making these in iron. i am not sure who made them previous to that period. i did check on line using the term “narrow” hinge and there are results, including on ebay. i did not run a search for anything 5″ tall.

bob, they do not have the thickness in the door to mortise that. for some reason they made these odd sized hinges that are like 5×4. if it was 5×5 you would need a 2.5″ thick door to put it through. 5×4 works great on a 2 or 2.25″ thick door.
i have been over this so many times, i have given up and i cut them. i often do not tell people what i do to protect my secrets, but as i get older i realize, i can let people come to me and i will help them here (for a fee).
they can put a 4×4 hinge in there if they wish and close in the mortise (the opposite of what you suggest). these are heavy doors, if they buy some commercial grade McKinney Hinges, they will hold like brass 5″ hinges and you know what, they can paint them up and not worry that they might have paid for pricey brass.

rebholution: i have held back here from speaking more for a variety of reasons. first, i do not know everything and you might find what you are looking for at demo depot or old good things. if you do, you might have to change all of them as they may not line up and swing on the same axis (they will work ok for now but will be a problem later). Now, i spent 1/2 an hour going through boxes of crap looking for the hinge you need. i had some but i tend to toss iron hinges in the trash ( these are not 5 x 2 3/4 you are looking for, they are probably 5×4; lay them open and flat to measure the width; i have 4×3″s here).
as RG says, go buy nice hinges. the problem is, i do not think you will find any to the fit you need. i have drawers full of eastlake here and found some 6×5’s and 5’s by something, but nothing close to what you need and if you showed up here with a bag of money and wanted me to cut some eastlake hinges to what you need, i would be loath to do that.
keep looking. simons hardware will not have them – in iron or brass. no one makes them in thi s measurement anymore. if you decide you wish brass, consider that you wish to use heavy brass hinges as the round top doors pull on the hinges (there is more torque put on the upper and lower hinges) than squared top door do due to the placement of the hinges.
i know what you are going through and i go through this several times a year. i did not want to over market myself the other day when i said “we cut them” but if you would like to get a set of hinges, you are welcome to contact me and i will solve your problem for you. if you wish brass, you can purchase the heavy 5″ Baldwins and i will cut them and rebore and countersink the holes for you.
i did not offer this the other day as i did not want to come across as someone who walks around at a cocktail party handing out business cards.

I agree with Steve, change them all! We are only talking about 3 hinges, but brass hardware on a beautiful door is like jewelry of a beautiful woman. Priceless….

keep in mind if you change one hinge, it must be an exact copy of the old one. if it is not, if even the pin size is off or the alignment is different than the others, the hinges will not turn on the same axis and this will cause some of them to pull on the door. it can damage them or loosen them. so consider changing them all.
sorry for the folks who would rather i comment once and leave it. but i as i work here things come to me and i add them and what i just said seems relevant.
