herringbone floor - how to proceed

Originally my husband planned to install wood herringbone floors in the house we are renovating, but because of delays he will be in Ithaca teaching when that work has to be done. So we will need to hire it out. I am thinking of getting bids from Carlos and also from our GC’s floor guy. But should we first deal with buying the wood, then look for an installer, or should we ask the installer to include buying the wood in his bid? Also, do people have recommendations as to the best dimensions for a herringbone floor? We have radiant floor heat so thinking of fairly narrow planks, 4 or 5 inches, with a 1:6 ratio. Any guidance welcome!

Herringbone is usually 2″ strips. If you find an old pic on line you should be able to work off that by counting the pieces. And count the pieces in the opposing turn to help figure not only the width but length. See jack at ny floor outside lowes front gate. He can tell you. I will walk in the house were i am working in a moment and if they have herringbone, i will lay a tape down and shoot a pic.

Some of these gc’s do not have flooring people per se but people willing to do flooring. Big difference. Because people on here speak so highly of carlos, i would just go to him and get a quote. Dont waste your time with others; flooring is usually a straight forward per sq ft cost and even if carlos charges a little more, he has probably earned it and deserves it.

I am not sure you will save anything buying the wood yourself.

Be sure to allow the flooring time to acclimate in the space uninstalled.

I’ll give Carlos a call. If he gets the wood, it will be in his bid and we’ll pay an extra 20% to the GC… I hope we will be able to get the wood acclimatized. I have read that it should be installed either while the heating is on, or while the AC is on, but the way schedules are going it looks more like the fall…

If you don’t have the wood in the house for at least a week, it will cup. Needs to adjust to the humidity. I would think you would want the AC to be off while the wood is adjusting.

The AC should be on and climate controlled for acclimation. You want the wood to acclimatize to ideal conditions with moderate temp and relative humidity as that would be environment the wood will best perform and will be the climate when occupied.

I am certainly no expert but wouldn’t you want the wood to acclimate to worst case conditions with severe humidity so the wood won’t cup during the summer when the AC is off and you’re on vacation or whatever? It’s not like the AC will be on forever. In my experience wood doesn’t cup when it encounters less humidity, aka in the winter. Presumably the floor installer will know.

The goal for wood is to maintain equilibrium. If you acclimatize to a high humidity enviroment you will have more severe shrinkage in the low humidity winter environment. Cupping is a result of imbalance. Wood will always react poorly at extremes of humidity and generally is more challenged locally by extreme low RH in winter. This would mean having AC on the summer install months is even more imperative.

Carlos told us that if we install in shoulder season, the wood flooring should sit in the house for two weeks before installation. If in the winter, it should be in the house with the heat on for at least one week.
