Help without lights for a month

If you are a legal tenant and you are staying, you should call the utility company and have the electrical account put in your name.

If you have been living in the apartment for three years you do have a right to stay.
Call Con Ed and ask why the lights are off. If the management company have turned them off in the basement, let them know you are there and have been for three years & that you have a right to stay.
How have you been paying rent? Utility bills etc? If you have proof of payments, even if it is just your payments to the leaseholder, that is sufficient.
Get in touch with your prime tenants family to ask them what they have done with the landlord. Can you afford the rent by yourself?
The bottom line is, if you want to stay, you will need a lawyer. Depending on what type of tenancy it is… Stabilized? Free Market? Rent Controlled?

Talk to a housing lawyer. Not sure what rights you have as a subtenant.
