Help! brownstone ceiling coming down--who fixes this?
Our hallway ceilings under the stairs
( slightly damaged wood lathe covered by plaster) in our brownstone needs to be repaired by someone who has knowledge of this kind of building. Not sure what kind of person even to call. Any suggestions? Thanks! [IMG_2859 2](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s1/:brownstoner:xHq8:img_28592.jpeg.jpg)

Sorry I did not answer. If the plaster and lath are failing it may be due to age and the pounding up and down the stairs or water intrusion. You need to find a plasterer who will assess it and they can give you an idea of what the problem is. If you decide you want to maintain the integrity of plaster and lath then the plasterer should be able to reattach the lath and then build up skim coats until finished. Watch some Youtube videos so you have an idea of how the process works and ask question to make sure your plasterer knows what they are doing. Or you can opt to use sheetrock with a few nice skim coats and decorative molding which may be more durable. Good luck.

Best wall is a very competent seeming company but he bailed on a job after promising to do it because it was a rental. He appears in all ways to be highly qualified but his flip flopping was highly unprofessional.

If plaster is falling because of an underlying structural problem, I’d find a contractor to correct that.

You’ll need a plasterer if you want the ceiling repaired with like material; a handyman if you just want a sheetrock patch.
