Handyman or carpenter wanted to oil Ipe deck in Clinton Hill

there is a reason why I do not like the “by the hour” language. people who use words like this are often looking for a certain “ilk” of person while avoiding another “ilk” of person and this is often done to enable people to hire workers under 19th century working conditions (no protections). as a worker, i am tired of people trying to undo the good of the 20th century and move us back to the 19th. i am of the mindset the the only good thing about the “good old days” is that they are gone.

Or will you compensate them in way they can protect temselves or will you provide them with insurance should they become injured on your property? Sick days for that work related injury? These are things to consider as you arrive at an hourly wage.

Don’t TaskRabbit ‘taskers’ set the hourly rate, followed by the TaskRabbit Service charging an additional fee, as in a % of the total price you pay the ‘tasker’ ?

A person hired by a homeowner to conduct work on their property is, by all rights, a safety insured worker with liability & personal injury insurance coverage – overhead.
I never heard of a homeowner in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, or Staten Island hiring a person in “the Trades” on an hourly basis unless maybe they are from a Big Box Hardware Store parking lot.

They do! You can browse and see who you think would be the best match. Some just do moving, others yardwork, others fine carpentry — it’s all reflected in their rate. I’ve found some great people to do things that I either didn’t have the skill or the time to do. I’ve oiled my ipe deck myself in the past, but if I didn’t have time it’s something I sure I could find someone with the skills to do on the platform.

Carriagehouse is correct. Annep, what is going on here is that op is trying to micromanage the cost of something that would be so miserly the worker, probably someone who op wants to be a responsible adult, would get paid something that no human could resonably survive on.

Years ago, people who wanted to do this for small jobs hired neighborhood teens. My son does work for neighbors. $25 an hour for spending money. He is given everything he needs by us his parents – so the money he makes is his. Now people want to hire adults for these low wage, no benefit, no state protection jobs and they tell those of us who work that 25 an hour is good.

If people want to do this sort of thing for painting and yard work, look for teenagers. Its been great for my son. Great for the larger society. And guess what, teenagers know it all so the customer benefits.

Oh, I guess I didn’t read it that way — it just sounded like the op was asking for recs. Having often struggled to find people who are both recommended and reliable, I really like the fact that you have a number of people who are available, responsive and you can see their reviews up front. I agree that you can expect to get what you pay for — but since the people on the platform set their own fees (and for the skilled workers the rates are usually super healthy) — this feels like a win/win.
