Hi all! anyone have any leads for me? Looking to replace the old, gross carpet in our brownstone in the common areas. Can anyone recommend a…carpenteer? Someone who does carpeting?

We used Caesars Carpet Centre on 5th Ave in South Slope for the stairways of our brownstone. Very affordable and prompt service. Been around forever.

I looked at a lot of brownstone coops before I bought, and almost most all of them had gross carpeting on the stairs and in the hallways. The place I bought also had old, gross carpeting, but I was told that replacing it was in the cards soon. That happened after I moved in, and I recommended (from talking to the carpet store, which I believe is no longer in business, but any carpet store should have similar offerings) that we install commercial carpeting.

The reason all the coops (and some rentals I lived in) all had gross carpeting was because they had carpeting designed for residential living rooms, with the deeper pile that holds onto dirt and dander and stains. We put in a a low pile, synthetic, commercial carpeting that did not hold onto dirt, stains came of easily, and it looked just about as good when I moved out 8 years later as it did the day we installed it, with only an occasional yearly or so professional cleaning after the first few years.. We also had the hallways painted at that time, and when I sold people remarked about how the common areas were muc h nicer that most around.

Not what you asked … but installing commercial carpeting is how to keep your new carpeting from looking gross.

Brokelin is exactly right — choose a commercial grade carpet. Better Carpet Warehouse, 443 Atlantic Ave is unglamorous but reliable.
