hallway lighting

*edit to the above – the link was truncated.  just go to the main site and look for semi-flush if that’s what you’re interested in, and there’s a pretty wide selection.   Flush mount is another good option for hallways, though LEDs won’t work well in a fully enclosed fixture (heat dissipation issues)

hi all- anyone have any interesting pictures or good recommendations on some lighting for your brownstone hallway? We’re finally painting our 1980’s teal green 3 story hallway and thought we should switch out the terrible flourescent ring lights that are there now. nothing period or old-timey necessary.
Also what color is your hallway/vestibule? Has it held up well with tenants etc? thanks!

I went with some semi-flush fixtures, like what you would see here: http://www.bellacor.com/victorian-semi-flush-flush-and-semi-flush-lighting.htm  – if you look around, you can find period appropriate aesthetic (if not 100% accurate) lighting pretty inexpensively used with a light colored ceiling, it provides plenty of light, and a certain warmth that’s absent from flourescent.  Also – after years of headache inducing CFL’s (i’m one of the rare people who can see the 110 hz flicker)  i decided to get some LED bulbs – specifically the philips ambiled or whatever theyre called (home depot has them, they’re the space-age looking orange and silver bulbs – one of the only ones with a 360 degree throw) – what a difference.  a bit spendy, but it’ll be many years before you have to worry about changing them, and the color is the closest i’ve seen to incandescent, without having to go incandescent. For hallway coloring, we went with light ceilings, and nuetral walls.   Used to be darker browns, but that closed in the space too much.  I decided to stick with earthy tones, but you can do a reddish clay color instead of just plain old brown, or something with a little green to it, but *not* green, etc.. and you can lighten it up a few shades, without getting into a light color scheme.  Include color on your accents (molding, crown molding, wainscott, etc) – go with a good paint and it’ll hold up fine with wipe-clean maintenance. There will always be times where moving a bed or couch in will gouge the wall, so be prepared to touch up, especially around the bends in the stairs.
