Giving away leftover soundproofing stuff from construction

E- i think about the mistake i made often because i have a piece of equipment here that gets used perhaps once a year (it is a generator for my house permanently housed in my shed; here in queens we have overhead lines and loose power on this street when we get a bad storm) that is very loud. i have thought about isolating the sound and wonder about the mass loaded vinyl and other product.

when i did that to that door, it was 1996. there was no internet. there was no specialty supply selling mass loaded vinyl on the ‘net. there was no amazon (i went to the Mcmaster Carr Sales catalog). if you go to do this, i would consider what JJ noonan is saying and go to a specialty supply where a sales person can advise you a little. of course, be skeptical when talking to sales people and do research behind them to see that you are buying only what you need. They should be able to lay out the basics.

getting the right materials for a particular sound is important. (in my case, my boss left me an article from a facilities magazine after that discussed this kind of equipment specifically and they said what you need is space between the equipment and where ever; there is a lot written about this).

if you begin buying this stuff on amazon (i know, a lot of people hate amazon) they will offer up related products. even after years of working in buildings, when i order some specialty product on amazon, i often glance at the recommended related items that others purchased when buying whatever and sometimes i end up ordering something from that list.

also, take a look at mcmaster carr. they have a lot of specialty product but don’t order anything until you do your research.

If only I lived close to you! I’ve been searching for soundproofing insulation, but that stuff is expensive! Can I ask, does it work? I just want to know if it’s worth the investment before I purchase any.

I tried to attach mass loaded vinyl to a mechanical room door in an office building once and it worked with very limited success. Op may have a different opinion or experience but with what i was dealing with – an air handler- the noise seemed to be more through the structure and less through say the air. If you want to try stuff like this, read about it.

in my very limited experience, it’s hard to make it worth the investment. one of many possible problems will persist which will make the whole effort seem unnecessary. e.g. you were addressing the wrong type of sound, you forgot one element like whisper clips, puttying sockets, etc. or—most likely—one of the workers did something not to specification that you may or may not know about.
