Geothermal in Brooklyn?

While we are talking heat pumps etc — I cannot find good intel on this, but does anyone know of anyone doing single family (or small multifamily home) geothermal? Sounds like some larger developments are doing it here in Brooklyn. I have a fully detached house, but with a relatively shallow backyard so I don’t have a ton of space. It seems so cool! As my posts here suggest we are on borrowed time with our old boiler and really thinking about steps for coming winters.

Olga, this is so helpful! You got pretty far in the research process. Looks like federal tax credits are 30% of the cost + another $5k from the state. A 100k system would still cost 65k, and that’s without the interior work. I think we are heading toward solar + the most unobtrusive minisplits possible for shoulder season and cooling + a new boiler and windows bit by bit. — If I can get any better intel on geotheral I will post it here!

I was doing some research, called around ( and also called contractors listed with the link that was provided in this thread).
It was for the house on Staten Island on a large half an acre lot, great access for the machinery to do all the work and a couple of areas that are perfect for installation.
All in all I was told a couple of times that they do not want to come to NYC and do residential installation for one family house – too much hassle, too many permits etc.
Ballpack ( if they will come at all) would be around 75-100K for the loop system for 4000+ sf house. Totally does not make sense to do this at that price.
One of the companies was from LI as I remember.
No locals.
This was 2 years ago when we bought the house and moved from Park Slope.
We just replaced poorly sized boiler. And did a lot of work towards passive house as well: windows, insulation, etc.

Whould be interested to see if somebody else is more successfull with this quest.

Thanks! It seems to be a popular thing upstate in the Albany area. I understand there are both horizonal loop systems / fields (just 6-10 feet deep, but need at least a quarter acre I believe) and vertical (hundreds of feet deep, not much ground space) — which I guess that North Slope house had. I have a driveway so our backyard IS accessible but god knows if it can be drilled. We don’t have the surface area. There’s some talk of setting up systems that can be shared across properties, and I think that kind of collective investment in renewable power is probably where the future is at. I’ll see if I can dig up any better info while the incentives are SO good but otherwise likely to put in minisplits and a more efficient gas boiler and wait another 10 years.

Years ago I saw a geothermal well installed at a single family house in North Slope that was for sale. I never was able to get any information about who installed it. They had it in the front of the house. This was a deep well – versus a field. Do you have a large backyard and/or the ability to get a well-digger in the back?

I have only heard of fairly large buildings doing it. ConEdison has a rebate program and list of contractors (I’d be careful about that list though, they are probably not vetted). Also this association may have some good info: https://www.ny-geo.org/who-we-are/ I’ve heard one drawback can be settling of soil and undermining of a foundation. NYS also has some information https://cleanheat.ny.gov/geothermal-heat-pumps/ Agree it sounds amazing. Would love to hear what you find.
