Gas Line to House?

Hello – I am looking at a house that has no gas service and no meter, does anyone know if I have to pay to have national grid run a line to the house and put in a meter? Or would it be complimentary of national grid? Thanks

National Grid would never make you pay to have a gas line run into your home; they make their money off supplying a new house gas every month! Oil companies actual function the same way with their repair and replacement of units.

You will have to bring it to the point NG will take over, finish the line and then install the meter. It’s not cheap and you run several risks…

-You may have to tear up the front of the house so if you invested in some Bluestone then that gets tossed like salad.
-You may have to tear up the sidewalk
-You may have to tunnel to and through the street (No fun especially since another utility may come right after you and tear it all up again)
-If there is asbestos on any part of “your” line then you have to professionally remediate that
-You have to hire someone to re-install everything that was torn up and pray that the settlement goes well and you are not dealing with a wavy sidewalk, wavy yard and unlevel concrete or bluestone or whatever you have.

However if you can work out getting some money for the headache and expense from the owner then it may be worth it all.

But you’ll need a licensed plumber anyway and, of course, he/she will take care of the sleeve.

If you’re doing this underground, you will be responsible for installing a sleeve through your foundation for them to run their pipe through. And the space (mechanical room / closet) where the meter will live will need to have a supply of fresh air.

finally got through to national grid! No, I am not responsible for work done from the street to the house (in case anyone else runs into this issue)

Thanks, I think I stated my question wrong. There is no gas line from the street, would I be responsible for digging up and repairing the sidewalk, street, etc?

I had to have this done for a recent purchase. The previous owner had their meter removed at national grid’s instruction. I simply called to set up new service and they scheduled for a new meter to be placed in the home. No new gas line was required as one had always been present.
