Holy sh*t! I just got this email from National Grid. 48 years in our house heating with natural gas and I’ve NEVER seen anything like this!

Natural Gas Usage ? Due to extreme temperatures resulting in increased energy demand and unexpected interstate pipeline disruptions, we are asking for your assistance this evening to help us prevent a potential natural gas outage in your area. We realize this is an inconvenient time while you may be at home with friends and family celebrating the holidays. We’re asking all natural gas customers in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and Long Island to reduce natural gas usage through tomorrow afternoon. Here are some simple ways you can reduce your natural gas usage safely:

If your health permits, turn your thermostat down just five degrees at home, and to 60 degrees if you are not at home or, are operating a business.
If possible, avoid using gas fireplaces, clothes dryers and other appliances that use gas, which are not critical to your safety or health.

Along with asking you to co nserve, we’ve requested our commercial customers who participate in our Demand Response program switch to alternative fuels. We’re also utilizing liquefied natural gas units for additional supply. Ensuring safe and reliable service for our customers and the communities we serve is our number one priority and concern. Owners of natural gas pipelines have reported equipment problems caused by the cold weather and the heavy demand for natural gas are challenging their ability to provide adequate amounts of gas throughout the Northeast. That’s great for you Steve, but my fireplaces are all gas (and anyway, the gas pipes, which are the same as for the old lights, are cut off.).

We got that message too. However, we have just one stove that uses gas and nothing else. I’ve never been happier our boiler uses oil.

almost as dramatic as when they refused to turn on new gas service. its just a ploy to get their pipeline. i dont buy it.

Oil heat is outlawed in NYC beginning in 2030. I’m not sure if it’s just the large buildings over 25,000 square feet, or all buildings. National Grid is trying to get the pipelines in place to meet this additional demand. Most buildings above 110th Street in Manhattan use oil.

No oil heat will be gone by 2030. At the moment I believe gas heat is banned in new buildings over seven stories. I’m not in the business so not familiar with the ins and outs.

don’t see how the demand for natural gas will increase. new buildings are electric, and even smaller residential 1-2 families are ditching boilers. national grid and the gas industry want to maintain their stronghold by building the infrastructure at the expense of ratepayers.

If they get rid of oil in 2030 wouldn’t demand for gas increase. I have a building with electric heat, electric heat can be expensive. Also who is going to pay for all the old rent stabilized buildings in upper Manhattan and the Bronx to be retro fitted for electric heat.
I don’t have a dog in the fight, but the law is passed, come 2030 there’s going to be a shakeup.

im not an energy expert by any means but with the amount of buildings ditching gas for electric, its hard to see gas demand increasing. especially when most buildings have already converted to gas from oil – including larger buildings. imo its the electric grid/infrastructure that cant handle increased demand.

the gas industry feels threatened, especially with CLCPA and the push for renewables.

national grid sent that email christmas eve to cause panic, and 48 hours later DEC issues draft permits to the iroquois pipeline expansion.

its all bs in my opinion to keep us reliant on fossil fuels.
