Hi all –

I nearly lost my mind with my sky high gas bill this month. I called National Grid who told me I’m using the same amount of therms as the previous owner but that the price of gas has doubled. She then told me that having the temperature lower at night actually increases the cost. Is this true?? It seems crazy to me.

Also, and related, can anyone tell me about insulating a house without doing a gut reno? We are going to be doing some work, but pretty targeted to kitchens and bathrooms.

What is your gas bill and how big is the home? Our oil co sent out a letter saying prices have tripled overnight. Re insulation, options vary depending on your situation. One good idea is to make sure lots of cold air is not coming in through exterior doors by weatherstripping, caulk paneling under windows, etc. Others insulate the attic. We have not taken that route for various reasons. We repointed the brick on the first floor, and air infiltration decreased. If you are in a wood frame, it is possible to insulate from the exterior if you redo the siding.

I’ve been taking heating classes since the early ’80s. We do some things differently now and most of the classes I take are about modern equipment but I’ve been told for decades that lowering the temperature at night, which is something we call “nighttime setback”, should never be beyond a 4° F difference from the daytime setting. After that, the cost of recovery from the wide day-night temperature differential quickly offsets any potential savings. The way to make setback work is to go long and deep, i.e., a 10° F differential over 48 hours or more.

What we do differently now is we modulate our water temperatures and flow rates to accurately reflect the heat loss of the home or building at various outdoor temperatures and wind conditions.

RE: insulation; I was always told that blowing insulation into an uninsulated cockloft was the most cost effective step you could take (other than simple DIY caulking). It made a very noticeable difference in my house.

i learned what MP is saying is true the hard way. i once took over the management of a rather large and spread out building (meaning it was not stacked and protected on the sides by neighboring buildings and it also had a rather large roof area exposed to the sun). the A/C was programmed to go up to 76 degrees at something like 7 PM and return to like 72 degrees at 4:30 Am. i thought we could save money by having the A/C come back to 72 at 6 am, as the sun was rising. it did not work. we had to start cooling the building well before the sun came up as once it did, there was no way the A/C equipment could catch up.

@Bob Marvin A person would feel the forced air system recovering more quickly and make nighttime setback more comfortable, but not more practical. What is often overlooked is that everything in the house heats and cools with its surroundings. The walls, floors, furniture, etc, all need to absorb that replacement heat energy when it’s time to come back to daytime temperatures.

I set up a plan where the yearly cost is estimated and averaged out so I pay the same thing every month.
