Gas authorization

I lost my current plumber and need to get a new licensed plumber on the job. He says I need gas authorizations. I don’t have authorizations right now but want to know if they are required to get a new permit or just for closing the job?

Thanks Chris, that was very helpful especially the bit about DOB and National Grid. Now I understand.

You can have the gas turned on by National Grid without Gas Authorization. It sounds contridicitng, but what it really comes down to is Naitonal Grid and the DOB are barely ever in good communication. That being said it can be turned off at any time if it is phoned into the DOB or National Grid and they see you never had Gas Authorization.
In terms of your project, you need a Master Plumber to file a Superceding Permit and take over the job from the previous. Every plumber treats these siutations differently but we for instance will never sign off on work that we did not perform ourselves, even if it is tested, because once we do we assume total liability.

Yeah, the process has changed. In order to get the gas that i assume has a national grid lock on it turned back on you will need a gas authorization. In the process of getting that authorization you might need to verify the existing service in the building so that would be when your floor, with its gas running, might be asked about. I don’t know how the city is treating projects that were partially completed while the gas regulations changed but my guess is that you might need to do a pressure test of the entire gas system in the building before dob will give the authorization for national grid to turn on the locked floor. Do you have an expediter?

I’m trying to finish the unfinished floor (where the gas was closed off by Nat. Grid) and then get Gas authorization for it before we close it out. However a plumber we met with said we needed gas authorization for the floor I was on too. But I remember Nat Grid turning on the gas so why would I not have gas authorization. It was turned on before those gas explosions in the city happened. That could be why.

Hard to tell from your description exactly what’s going on. What exactly are you trying to do? The city has become MUCH more intense about gas work over the past couple years so depending on your situation you might be in a pickle.

Janedrew, I don’t know. The DOB is a complicated sea to navigate. As a fellow homeowner going through a renovation I can only speak to our experiences with anything approaching confidence. Live in construction is whole other ball of wax.

Thank you. That’s what I thought too! Then I got confused because on the DOB site, it said we need authorization to apply for a permit. What happens if you live on one floor with no gas authorizations (but with gas), and still have open permits as work needs to be done on the other floor?

Maggie O, I think you’re right. You have to have an active permit so that you can call for a Gas Inspection. Once the Gas Test is passed then you can secure Gas Authorization, which allows the gas to be turned on and used.

i could be wrong about this, but i believe the authorization is required in order to get gas service turned on by the utility. i believe you need an active work permit in order to request the authorization.
