Front Door Locks & Vestibules: Outer, Inner, or Both?

If you put a smart lock deadbolt on the outer door and expect to have packages delivered through that door, you will need a door closer on the door to push it closed behind people or the deadbolt will not lock properly. If the door is not closed all the way, the bolt will retract.

Looking for perspectives on whether to put the deadbolt on the outer, inner vestibule doors, or both.

Context is our brownstone that we’ve been in for ~1.5yrs has no functioning locks on the outer parlor doors and a (~1960s added) rim deadbolt on the inner doors. We are doing some renovations and I’d like to install a smart lock, but for a few reasons a smart deadbolt is far easier to put on the outer vs inner set of doors. I’m a bit stuck.

My thinking:
Outer: I can use the vestibule space to store coats and bags. The outer seems safer. It also enables the use of a smart lock (on my doors).

Inner: It is easier for package delivery to be dropped inside the vestibule. Arriving guests don’t need to wait in elements while we come to door. But on both 1/2 the time currently people assume outer is locked anyway.

Put deadbolts on both. you can put a smart lock on the outside if you wish to allow packages to be dropped. do not leave the outer door unlocked. someone will enter your entryway and work the inner door without being seen from the street.

if you do not go with a smart lock on the outer door but instead put two deadbolts in, have them keyed up with a master and then an “a” key and a “b” key. the master is for immediate family to use. the “a” works the outside lock and the “b” key the inner. the a key is a loaner for guests, trades people, etc. this way if you do not get a key back from someone or they lose one, no one has the “b” key.

i am a former building manager and restoration contractor and now a licensed home inspector. Less of my work is for buyer’s (I do them, but trust me, the sale’s agents do not like me looking at these old houses) while most of my work is as a consultant to owners. Pre renovation, roof inspections (and coaching for self maintenance), maintenance inspections, water leak investigation. I tell most people it is not worth it to bring me out to consult on door issues but if you have roof issues and can use an inspection there, i can talk to you about security or door restoration.

I think a lock on the outer door is far more secure. Although burglaries through the front door are now (thankfully) quite rare, having easy access to a locked inner door would give someone a chance to work on that lock out of sight of passers by. FWIW I initially didn’t have a deadbolt on my inner door. In the bad old days of the late ’70s I installed one so that a burgler would have a second barrier to overcome while my alarm was going off. Fortunately the system was never actually tested.

Definitely the outer lock is very important, at the least. We have an outer lock only. Mail delivery at our place is chucked over the metal gate under the stoop. Neighbors have mailboxes on the side of the stoop next to the metal gate.
