front door - double or single

More important than a kickplate, be sure that the bottom of the door is always sealed. The very bottom bottom. That is where the moisture gets in and gets wicked up into the wood. That is where the rot begins. They did not seal the bottoms of the old doors when they originally installed them 120 years ago.

In so far as kick plates, in most cases on these old doors, they were added after the rot began to tie it all together.

My husband wants a 48-inch double door to replace our current single door; the house originally had a double door. I worry about entering the house on a daily basis through just one small door. Do those of you who have a double door find that a nuisance? I don’t know how hard it is to open both doors.

48″ is a little narrow for a double. On most double entry doors, each door is 27″.

So when i rebuild doors and for whatever reason have to rebuild an edge on a door and take an edge down on an opposing door, i do just that by an inch or so. Often this is done to move modern lock hardware away from glass molding.

What you are talking about is going to cost money to have done correctly. It won’t cost what new doors will cost if you modify old doors but even anything old will have to be rebuilt as it is.

You may have seen that i have to pair of tall entry doors that i am willing to sell. They must be rebuilt and can be modified in the process.

Totaling opening of 54 is for a standard width pair of brownstone doors. The ones i have will be workable.

Something tells me if you go energy rated, you will not be able to find a pair of doors to the specifications you are suggesting. Possibly someone makes an off the shelf pair but it seems remote that you might find one the is say a little wider and one say a little narrower. That would be custom and i am not sure how that would happen.

We switched from a single replacement door to double doors (the house originally had double doors) and it has been a great improvement. There is much more light coming into the entry. Opening and closing and getting in and out of one of the double doors is much easier and less awkward than the previous single door. Possibly this is because the swing of the door fits better into the vestibule. If we need to move large items in and out, we release the metal bars that hold the stationary door in place, and we use the entire opening, which is large. (The new double doors were made to fit into the original opening.)

Op clarified that they are looking for Energy Star rated doors. Simpson door does make doors with double pane glass but their product is not Energy Star rated.

OP, if you are going to try to go with a double door unit there, you are going to have issues achieving energy star rating. I am sure some manufacturer makes some big grand (and cheap and garish) unit that they slap in these McMansions they build on Staten Island or out in New Jersey, but do you really want that style? And that kind of unit will be too wide for your 54″ opening because the people who live in Mcmansions will not fit through a single leaf of narrow brownstone door – even if you go brick to brick. you can get a custom-built door unit and, if you want one door wider than the other it will have to be custom-built, but something tells me a custom-built unit will not be Energy Star rated. yes, makers can make a double door unit that is well insulated (and has double pane glass) and works like a modern door unit and looks like period product but you will pay for that and it will still not be ener gy star rated. the real issue here is not are people happy with what they get but if it can be done with an energy star rating.

It would be interesting to know if Simpson door or anyone else makes a double unit that fits into a brownstone opening (we have to remember, the reason custom shops exist is because most stuff made today is made to fit modern houses and the brick to brick on a brownstone is an odd width for either a single door or a pair of doors; you will use a pair of narrow doors or build down to a wider single door) but again, it will fall apart with the energy star rating.

I also believe the frame has to be rated and again, what mass produced product will come in the 54″ width? everything is either too narrow or too wide.

The market size is just not there for big companies like Simpson to produce energy star brownstone entry doors for this purpose for limited markets around certain urban areas. This is why custom door shops exist.

Two same-sized doors will give you the best aesthetic outcome. To maximize energy performance, you should look at Passive House certified double doors. They will seal completely and come with much better components. They will be custom but can also be made with any trim required for Landmarks approval (if necessary).

Agree with Home Inspector that a single door is going to be more energy efficient than a double. But a poorly made single door is going to perform worse than an energy efficient double door.

Re single vs. double and how it looks, that’s your personal choice and how each works with your overall facade. Walk around the neighborhood and see what appeals to you.

My thought is, from a brief glance, that passive house might be a European standard and that the possibility exists that some european manufacturer might pursue passive house and energy star but that seems a little remote.
