We are painting and repairing a few broken steps on our fire escape (8 family, 4 story home). No welding is involved. Do we need to get a permit for this type of work? Fire Escape is in the rear of the home.

in short, i do not believe you need a permit to do such work. i know, it sounds like something the city might want to inspect (i should not say that lest we start give them any ideas).

the long story: we went through this in a commercial building in the 1990’s. i had been running down the escape as i was checking to be sure the doors were locked and a step let go. i worked for the department responsible for all of this and we soon had an iron worker in doing the work (they checked all of the steps by hitting them with a sledge hammer). i do not recall my boss worrying about notifying any city agency and yes, that sounds counter intuitive considering this was a five story commercial building in manhattan. perhaps since that time the city has found a way to make money off this sort of thing?

Painting and repairing like kind for like kind should not be an issue. Alterations can be difficult or impossible since installing new fire escapes is not to code. We replace broken steps via metal worker as needed
