My neighbor is painting his fire escape FIRE ENGINE RED! it is 5 stories high and extremely prominent from my windows in the bedroom and living room off the driveway. Is this legal? What can I do? I have spoken to him but he isnt going to change it.

Be grateful you aren’t around here — new building owner just put up mega-bright bodega style tube lights all the way around his transom and side lights for the front door. ALL THE WAY AROUND.

Are you sure this is the final coat? Sometimes people prime ironwork with a red-orange primer before painting black. If this IS the final, I don’t think it looks that terrible against the brick anyway – I would get used to it quickly, though perhaps you won’t.

But would you like it right outside your bedroom and living room windows right up close? all five stories 15 feet away? This picture is from the other side of the building and you dont get to see how close it is to my building. across the driveway and bay windows. I called the owner and we agreed to change color and I would pay for the two story repaint. By the way, his tenants hate the color. This is not primer, this is a semi gloss paint over primer that had been there for ten yrs.

If “tsarina” is so upset that she’s willing to pay for a new paint job and the owner of the other building agrees that solves the problem. I personally LIKE the red color, but aesthetics are subjective.

That red fire escape looks pretty nice to me, great paint job. But I can see your point about having the color RED in front of your window. This is very subjective though.
