Filing for Siding Replacement (Front and Back of Wood Frame Row House)

our neighbors did this without a permit and got in trouble and fined because they built out over the existing siding. They did this by creating a new frame. This was considered an alteration and required a permit. so, while i do not think a permit is required if all you are doing is replacing siding, be sure you understand the scope of what will be done before just proceeding. also, if you have a tenant, a sidewalk shed could be required…

I believe the rule is that if you are removing only the siding and the house is only three stories (including the garden floor) (or rather under a certain height) you do not need to file. You can check with an expediter or architect to be sure.
