Filing department of consumer affairs complaint against contractor - downsides?

I am curious to know where you netted out with this. It seems like DCA just mediates and if the contractor says they aren’t responsible the DCA can’t do anything. Then the only recourse is going to court.

Hi,
We used a licensed contractor, for a permitted renovation, but very soon after all payments were made we discovered significant water infiltration in several areas where the contractor worked. He never responded to our calls and texts, and never fixed those issues (including cellar hatches that leaked so badly we now have to rebuild the entire bulked area bc of ongoing water damage) – we plan to file a complaint with the Department of Consumer Affairs. But our house is old and has been renovated over the decade in crazy ways – I understand that the complaint will include an inspection of our house. Can anyone tell me: would the inspection be limited to the work in question, or might we bring on more trouble than already have for things that have been done improperly in the past? We still have an open permit and would have been doing the rest of the project right now, with a new contractor. But now we’er just waiting, and worried about exposing ourself to worse trouble with an inspection. Any thoughts? Thanks community!

I doubt that Consumer Affairs communicates to DOB

DCA doesn’t inspect the house. They just confirm the contractor is licensed, insured and can be contacted.

I have done it twice, first time they reimbursed me for the crappy work, second time constructor weaseled out because it is a multi use building. Pretty painless process.
