EV Level 2 charger in 2-3 family Townhouse situation

Does anyone have a Level 2 EV charger installed outside their Brownstone?
Does DOT issue permits for curbside outlets? I guess not
And pulling a cable over the sidewalk is also not an option.

Any ideas.

My post was not about creating private parking spaces on public property Not at all.. I was asking if there is a way to legally pull a cable to charge the car while it is parked in the street.

And if anyone has a way to ban all cars from the city – I’m 100% for that. But from what I see thats not going to happen any time soon.

Agree with putnamdenizen — giving up some of the most valuable land on earth for street parking is something that continues to provide diminishing returns for New Yorkers (much like car ownership as a whole — said from a car owner 🙂 ).

In some upscale center city neighborhoods of Philadelphia, rich people have used EV chargers as a way of creating a reserved space in front of their own home. Seems to me in NYC it would be better to develop publicly accessible, off-street charging capacity rather than try to shoe horn it into private vehicle storage on public streets.

Thanks Gabe. Spontaneously I was thinking of a barely visible recessed box in the pavement rather than an upright station. It could open it with a key and you’d pull the cable out. This could also be a shared system between neighbors. I think if it is presented as a pioneering effort to allow community members without garages to own an electric vehicle, it should be possible to get support from the local Community board or a Council member.
To designate the spot for electric vehicles or even your vehicle exclusively seems to me like a difficult and separate task. Practically if you have the spot for one night a week it should be sufficient unless you make more than 250 miles per week in the city.

This is a great questions and I’ve researched this specifically with a friend who is a nyc civil engineer. Doing this cleanly requires approval from a number of city agencies including DOT approval including revocable consent. We concluded we’d probably need a lawyer, survey and engineer/architect seal for the plans and insurance info provided to the DOT. Landmarks would likley be another significant complication althought not many have that issue. We got to a point where we would be ready to submit plans for approval and likely start incurring fees. I’m still interested in picking this back up and open to anyone looking to disucss further and help. Access to the spot in front (or nearly in front) of the house is an issue but it does seem lik it couldn’t be overcome with the gov’t/city suppot. This also wouldn’t be cheap if done properly and with asthetics in mind.

If this could be done (which I doubt) what would be the chance of keeping the space open for your use? I suspect these chargers aren’t for us row house owners.
