Hi all, we are renovating our entry way doors as part of a larger project. I guess the dream is to find several tall, beautiful 2/3rds glass vintage doors in good condition at a low low price. We would like to put in two double doors plus transom over top, and two doors for the interior section from vestibule to home.

Basically, looking for suggestions on where we might find a repository of good quality vintage doors. Or otherwise, if anyone has worked with a carpenter who has done similar projects in the past that you were happy with, would appreciate the recommendation. Fortunately, we are not landmarked, although we are looking at something fairly traditional.

Try: http://www.bigreuse.org/. Eddie Hibbert used to have a great spot in Clinton Hill for salvage doors, but I’m not sure if it’s still operating. In terms of a carpenter, I have heard great things about http://www.thetinkerswagon.com/. He can build either new doors or fix older doors.

Thank you EJR! I’ve been by The Big Reuse a few times looking for doors as well as other items. Have not had luck so far there with doors. Looked around for Eddie Hibbert – all I saw was that he was considering a new location in 2014/2015 but didn’t see evidence of where to.

Eddie Hibbert relocated to Utica just south of Atlantic Ave. Was in there a month or so ago, and he’s rebuilding his stock.

J – Google Maps says its 61 Utica. I found it by going to his old location, which was literally closing on its last day and there was a sign listing the new location. If you end up getting new doors, I recommend going to Dykes. The large dimensions we needed weren’t in stock but it only took a day for them to get it, and it was definitely very very solid wood– It was tremendously heavy. We painted it ourselves. The price was super reasonable. After getting a couple of very high quotes from a couple of carpenters, we found someone reasonable and competent.

Sue – at the moment exploring options. It is part of a larger renovation so there is always the option to have the contractor do the installation. My preference would be to have the door supplier handle the installation and quotes tend to reflect an installation price (Dykes, which has come highly recommended on this forum, does not do installation).
