I’m not quite THAT old. I do have a candlestick phone, which I actually used for years, but I bought it as an antique (AND it’s a late ‘20s dial model—no “hello central”.

hi,

i am still having ongoing issues with Con Ed saying my H&C is using electricity that is beyond the possibility of what’s actually plugged in there. A weird aside I noticed a surge in energy costs after a Con Ed outage fried my boiler mainboard. I asked them to inspect the Smart Meter to see if it was impacted, but they said it was working as expected. I had 9 months or so of data pre surge where the usage was much lower, so I do not believe this is just a Smart Meter problem. Fast forward to this year where I have had 5 months of no bills due to the smart metered account being under review. When asked why it was under review they said it was because my usage was ‘too low in December for a heating account.’ Not exactly confidence inspiring. That just resolved itself and I suddenly have 5 months of billing all at once.

In short, I would like Con Ed to inspect the Smart Meter, but I would also like to find an electrician to independently verify the actual usage is accurate since it seems impossible.

ConEd’s billing has been erratic for decades. When we bought our house on 1974 we got an estimated bill of over $1,000,on an as yet unoccupied house , that they reduced to about $10 after I complained to the Public Service Commission.. Maybe you should call them about your “smart” meter problem.

Same, I was getting billed on vacant units where the readings showed zero usage and con ed refused to listen or budge until I got the state involved then they were all apologies and results..

years ago i got bumped off my telephone carrier and the long distance calling plan i had with them by another company. i did not learn of this until i got my bill and we had a lot of long distance calls – like $650 worth. the carrier was willing to negotiate only so far but i wanted to pay what i would have paid on the plan i should have been on. after arguing with them for like 5 minutes, I said “if you cannot take care of this i will go to the public service commission”. those words worked like magic.

I’ve also used the Public Service Commission for phone problems. When I bought my house, back in the dark ages when there were only land-line phones, the phone company (THE phone company then—Ma Bell$ installed a phone but wouldn’t activate it. They said there wasn’t a copper line available. This went in for weeks. A call (on a pay phone, of course) to the PSC got the problem fixed within a day.
