Electrical inspection and old light fixtures.

We are collecting bids and taking inventory for electrical service upgrade. We several light fixtures that are pretty old. Everything is working but I have heard an opinion that those light fixtures is no go with an inspection even if we have new boxes and all other parts of upgrade are new and up to the code.

IIRC there was a thread here a few years ago to the effect that only the UL label and not ETL was accepted here, but that’s only for new construction. In such cases I think that JohnHancock’s suggestion is appropriate.

FWIW I didn’t have to replace my vintage fixtures after getting a new electric service, but that was many years ago.

i did just read something that states all NEW construction needs a label from an independent lab. you folks who do these renos will know more than i do if a complete gut rehab is considered “new” or not.

perhaps. perhaps. if the renovation is to the extent that the building’s utilities are considered new, then the codes require new fixtures. not in the sense that they want “new” fixtures, but fixtures that carry a UL label. a lot of agencies and insurance companies use the mark of an independent lab as the determination if something can be used in certain situations.

this was just a thought, i don’t know.

I would check the wiring on those fixtures. If the wiring is in good shape, or you have them rewired there is no reason you cannot use them.

Get a few of the cheapest fixtures from Ikea and install those, after the inspection install your vintage fixtures. Voilà.
