Electrical hum

I did some checks with my crappy old unit yesterday and it goes like this:

if you can hear something through the wall, even faintly, the machine will help you locate where it is and in my case got very loud when i was on it.

The downside of using this was, and this was big, it WILL pick up air borne noise and when you are trying to locate a sound, the air borne noise muddles it all and will override the noise you are listening for. it could be a car in the road or someone talking in your own house.

i hope you ordered one that has a flat reciever and not that pointed metal one, needle like. that thing is useless on a masonry wall. my set has one and i tried it.

and lastly, if you have to turn the sensitivity on the device up very high, your own breathing will interfere with it.

i wanted to share that with you before you open the package.

Hi everyone,

Looking for some help here. We own a two family townhouse, bought gut renovated. Recently, our tenants have been hearing a faint but distinct low frequency hum in their bedroom, and it’s been driving them (and in turn me) crazy. It’s at times intermittent and at times constant.

We’ve tried killing every breaker in the house, and it persisted. I’m thinking that means it’s not related to the electric wiring in this house, and perhaps something coming from the house next door. The person living next door won’t let me go in there to have a look. The tenant is asking me to tear open the dry wall to have a look, but I’m thinking that won’t really help anything, and just be expensive and pointless.

Any ideas here? Has anyone experienced this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Low frequency hum from a neighbor’s building? I would try to let it go .

Believe me, I would love to. But the tenants will not, they are constantly complaining that it’s interfering with their sleep, etc etc.

It could be a neighbors fridge, boiler, furnace, anything really. I’d say your tenants might have other motives – like breaking their lease, and not because of the hum.

Really not much you can do. Could very well be something in the neighbors home, but if they aren’t interested in even entertaining the thought of turning everything off in their room to check if it’s actually coming from them, what can you do. Don’t tear the drywall down, won’t help. If anything, adding another layer with green glue might lessen the noise. However, these low frequency noises in the silence of the night really penetrate well into your ears. One of my tenants who lived right about me had one of those oscillating tower fans, and it was the same problem; she said she couldn’t sleep without a fan on, and i said i couldn’t sleep with it on, luckily she moved out. There are also some mini split a/c units in a new development that i hear at night, they have a hum to them when they are in heating mode.

Speaking from experience, these “hums” really do get to you once you lay down in bed. If i were a tenant in that situation, i’d move out.

Hi everyone. Really appreciate your help.

I don’t think it’s about them wanting to break the lease – they just moved in on Sep 1, and love the apt otherwise, and spent a bunch of money on new furniture, etc.

It’s def not the heating – cause we literally killed every breaker in the house, and this started happening before it started getting cold.

The odd thing is that we’ve lived here for almost two years and the previous tenants never heard anything, and they hasn’t heard anything for maybe for first month they had lived hear.

The joys of being a homeowner/landlord!

You could try putting an ear to the party wall and see if it is coming from the neighbor.

It’s 100% coming from the party wall, but is it really possible for sound to vibrate through the brick, insulation, and drywall? I’m fairly sure is from the neighbor, but can it possibly be something sitting in between the drywall and brick party wall?

It’s likely not wiring or something in the wall, but an appliance on the neighbor’s side of the wall. It could be new, which could explain why it wasn’t a problem previously. For example, perhaps the neighbor just got an air purifier, a white noise machine or a fan. Is the room a bedroom? (Or a kitchen?) Any of these items could cause vibrations in the flooring. If that’s the issue, they can stop the problem by moving the appliance somewhere else in the room, putting it on a thick towel and/or on top of a solid piece of furniture sitting on a rug. So might be a good idea to chat kindly with the neighbor, if it’s possible.

Mystery noises are bothersome. If your tenants hear it I would expect the people on the other side of the wall hear it too. It’s likely something like a humidifier that is not in the room that they sleep in .

Just an idea… but you have you thought about getting a borescope inspection camera? You’d just need to drill a hole large enough to fit the snake camera in… I thought about getting one when I was inspecting behind my drywall… might still get one. If anything it will give you and the tenants some peace of mind.
