Easy to maintain deck and fence?

Hello dear brownstoners,

I am getting ready to fix up my backyard and trying to figure out what material to use for fencing and decking. I used wood in the past (both pressure treated and cedar) and it was a pain to maintain. I want something that does not require much maintenance but also looks cool and elegant. Any suggestions? Am I being realistic?

carriagehouse99, I think I see what you’re saying. However, regardless of the number of families, deck construction within 3′ of property lines must be non-combustible. I think we’re actually saying the same thing here. My point about the steel is that in our experience, it doesn’t make sense to do metal within 3 feet, and wood beyond that. We have done steel supports throughout, with non-combustible (maybe metal grating) within 3′ of the property line and wood decking beyond that. Done right, it actually looks very nice.

To address jimhillra: You stated that “…most new decks are being made of steel”, so to clarify for you what I was saying-
(1) “New decks being made of steel” applies only to a Multiple Dwelling Classifications.
…and THEN, homeowners often surface ‘removable & temporary’ wood tiles along with their wood patio furniture, covering the steel floors.

(2) Parlor Back Yard Decks provided for 1 & 2 Family Residence Classifications can be constructed of combustible material i.e. WOOD joists, floors, and railings if 3′ inwardly from the property lines (re the central area of the total building width) notwithstanding DOB examiners like the support columns, i.e. foundations to be structural steel.

I’m sure Madsen Consulting Engineering and other eng’s can define more.

The nicest Brooklyn deck I was ever on had slate tiles set into the metal floor frame – so, cooler than wood to walk on, and non-combustible. The only wood was the very nice, furniture-finished wood handrail on top of the black steel sides.

Keep in mind that any materials within 3 feet of a property line (rear or side) need to be non-combustible to meet building code. Synthetic materials(composites,fiberglass) will fail within 9 mo’s and the adhesives that bond the plastic particles with sawdust particles are highly flammable.
