Drainage question, slope towards middle of yard?
If the rest of the yard can absorb water i would pitch it away. The less water running through your main drain the better in case of blockage or other issues. I personally would have not made that trench drain dump into the house if the entire backyard is not concrete. Just an old house philosophy, but surveying the property and having all the facts is critical.

Hi all,
I have a new blue stone patio (10×18) with a proper 2-inch grade away from the house (10 feet deep) with a trench drain at the edge that goes into the main sewer (see my terrible drawing). My question is should I slope the rest of the yard (30×18) toward that drain? Or try to continue the slope away from the house (and essentially down hill from the drain)

If you’re on a left/right slope as well as back to front, that should be taken into account. When I leveled my garden there was an 18 inch variability left to right that wasn’t at all apparent just looking at it.

Good question. It’s a raised middle with a 2-3 inch downslope left and right (mainly because of tree roots). I plan on dumping a bunch of top soil and creating the slope however I want. Just not sure if I should try to channel that to the middle drain (essentially towards house a bit, but the drain is still 10 feet from foundation.

i have been watching this as i have had water issues here and dug a french drain/drywall system. with the drain and system i have, i would always be thinking what if that fails? in my case, we have a community drive here and i just did what i would like to tell you to do; run it away from the house. however, we had a water problem at a commercial building in the city once and my shortsighted idea (I was new to the city) was to move the water to another side of the property where it would flow from our lot into the neighbroing one and leave through the neighbor’s drain system. my boss was adamant that we not do such a thing as we would knowingly be placing our water onto the neighbor’s land (this is where a professional put his foot down and where someone with no experience would have caused headaches for someone else).
i say run it away anyway so long as you do not put your neighbor in jeapordy. and op, i did not try to think too much about what you are saying, but i suspect that the natural inclination of many who work around buildings and of people in more rural areas would be to run the water away from the building and only rely on the drain as needed. i might be wrong about this-
