Thanks stevecym – I’ll reach out once we are in and see what sort of options we have. A bit of chewed door is something we can live with for a while anyhow!

britnbrooklyn: we now also have dyed epoxies that can be put in the sort of damage you describe. but these are not perfect as the repairs would be visible. they work ok to plug a screw hole on site. perhaps a real furniture repair guy has a way to get around that kind of damage without actually refacing the wood elements with real wood. i do have a furniture guy i can run this by and can comment later, especially if you come back on here and ask.
and in case anyone is wondering why i don’t know how to use plastics or epoxies to make a repair as described above, it is because 90% of my work is exterior and i do not use plastics, fillers, bondo, and surfacing epoxies on exterior doors. i use wood and that is it, even if we are painting the door.

britnbrooklyn: it is possible to fix anything. it would be very pricey to do the little repair you are talking about and for me, that is actual shop work. perhaps others can do it on site but I find taking down a rail or stile to a door and then laminating another face on it and sanding it off requires a broad range of shop tools and i would hate to get through it and then, as i am about to put it all together, realize i need that one other tool that is buried in a drawer somewhere. once the glue or epoxy sets, it has to be sanded off, so better to have in the shop. otherwise easy to do and we do it all the time.

Most doors on my block that have been refurbished were done as Stevecym described —they look beautiful and new which, for me, is a problem. Years ago I started to strip my doors and gave up h because the oak looked so bad. However a few years ago I had the doors stripped, heavily bleached, stained, and coated with old-fashioned spar varnish. I now have doors that are good looking but obviously 120 years old,

Thanks Steve – this is really helpful. Has anyone had experience of successfully repairing interior sliding and parlor doors that have been chewed by a pet? We have some beautiful original doors that look like a dog has been enjoying for breakfast. in a home we are about to close on and other than the pet damage are in good shape and stripped of paint.

green thinker: this is how it is done and i do a lot of them: tear the oak facing off the doors. cut the oak edges off. rejoint the staves inside and sand it all off and put new edges, facing, and moldings on the door and bingo, new door.
we also do it with pine doors that had never been oak (or mahogany) and the nice thing about this, the old 1-3/4″ thick doors come back a full 2-14″ in thick.
i address this a little on my website:

That doesn’t seem to be a repair, but a full out replacement using new oak boards to build completely new doors.

Impressive stuff! Out of interest what sort of price range would one expect to pay for a repair of this nature (serviceable but very tired painted double front doors)?
