Does anyone know how to undo these types of hinges?

and the reason i said to use a very sharp wood chisel is so as not to beat up the edge of the finial. no screwdrivers. sometimes we have to sacrifice one of our good chisels and this is why this work costs money.

I want to strip some doors but all have these hinges that I cannot figure out how to disassemble. Does anyone have experience with these? Much appreciated. Good advice from Eman. Be aware old hinges of any sort are delicate and easily break. (These are called steeple hinges.) If you can do what Eman says and take the door off the hinges that way without removing the hinges altogether, the hinges are more likely to survive. Good luck.

So, the steeple or ball is seated on top of the hinge knuckle and the pin is removed from the top. These hinges also have steeples or balls on the bottom so driving a drift pin up the bottom will not work. Hitting the steeple with a hammer will not force it up. The way to remove the pin is to take a very sharp chisel and place it at the juncture of the knuckle and steeple and tap it in, gently. The old paint will crack away. I usually begin with the chisel bevel facing up to loosen it, so I can watch it work in between the steeple and knuckle and once it has separated a little, I turn the chisel over and press it in and then pull down on the chisel to work the pin up say another 1/4 inch. Once there, a screwdriver can be placed on the bottom of the steeple and tapped up with a hammer to lift it. A hammer alone will not do it and sideways blows will only bend the malleable pin.

Be careful not to hit the hinges leafs themselves as the may be easy to crack cast iron.

If a hinge is well seated in the hinge mortise and the screws are tight. I would do everything to avoid removing the hinges from the frame or door.

I figured something different had to be done because after some gentle taps nothing budged and I decided not to mess with the hinge plates. @stevecym I will take your advice tomorrow and give it a shot as you described. Thank you all for your advice (fingers crossed).

Wouldn’t the ball with the steeple be one that is attached to the pin? and is it possible that the hinges were installed upside down? If that is the case, try chiseling the paint away on the bottom of the hinge knuckle.

Bobj , that possibility exists more so with people today than on these original installations and had they installed these upside down when they were new, the pin probably would have fallen out on it’s own at which point they would have flipped the hinge.

i did watch the video.

with the post 1900 or 1920’s ball top hinges, tapping it with a screw driver will work and may not damage the hinge or pin. keep in mind, the post 1920’s hinge pins are heavier (watch video; that pin is over 2x’s the diameter of an old steeple pin; that does not look like a 19th century hinge to me) and less likely to bend, the hinges themselves are less likely to be that old cast and would be less likely to crack, and the ball offers a place to tap the pin with a screw driver. that is how i would do this in my own home, with my own crappy 1928 hinges.

if i were in a customer’s home with either steeple top hinges, or even older ball top hinges, or brass hinges, i would work it the way i describe in my post above because one will bend the thin pin on the old steeple tops or possibly even on old ball tops and on a brass ball top (i remove brass ball tops the same way i describe in the post above; with a very sharp wood chisel between the ball top and knuckle) we would scratch it with a screwdriver on th e side of the ball and perhaps ruin a hinge that might cost $50 or more.

the guy in the video is a generalist who does a lot of other things and may not work on many older homes that have steeple tops or in finer homes that have solid brass hinges. still, i have little respect for him as a “professional” for not warning viewers that doing this to a brass hinge might really damage the brass. (imagine doing this to an eastlake hinge? ouch).

i have had to make a lot of mistakes myself to understand the difference between these things and what can go wrong.
