Does a backyard downspout need to be connected to the main sewer line?

If you want to drain into the backyard it’s also wise to install a drainage system and not just have a pipe pouring out. That usually means a french drain and a dry well placed well away from the house, among other things. As other have noted, unless there’s a good reason for detaching from your sewer line, best to leave it as is.

It’s also worth noting there are parts of the city that have distinct separate sewers for waste and storm water. If your neighborhood has that, you’re actually not supposed to drain your gutters into the waste sewer. But that’s only fraction of the city and mostly in more newly built areas. I’d imagine older homes are grandfathered in, but anyone looking to make changes should look into it to be sure.

So long as it does not drain into neighboring yards & for your own benefit be sure it drains a long way from your back foundation.
The bottom line is you cannot drain or vent anything into neighboring properties.

My downspout (two family) fills three large rainbarrels and is also connected to the sewer….a hybrid solution.

If you currently have a roof downspout that enters the rear shed at the back of the house and meets up with your main drain/sewer line in the cellar, be cautious about changing this arrangement. It typically causes issues with flooding in the backyard.

[RAIN BARRELS](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s3/:brownstoner:gFFL:rainbarrels.jpg.jpg) The barrels connect to the downspout on the left. The hose is connected to soaker hoses that navigate the garden. I turn it on for 30 minutes or so in the summer months.The barrels are raised to help the water flow with gravity. I use the spigots to fill watering cans for potted plants.

Thank you for the picture! I am looking into creating a similar system with 4 barrels. Is this something you designed yourself or hired out? Particularly the downspout connection. Any things that needed to be modified or considered along the way. My concerns are mosquitoes and what disconnecting entails in winter. You really have been helpful.

The downspout adapter is easily bought online for a few dollars. I keep screens on the top opening and in the overflow hole to prevent mosquitoes. And I disconnect and drain the barrels before it freezes. Turn them upside down for winter storage. Super easy to setup and maintain.

Remember, the storm runoff also “cleans out” the main sewer line which runs under the house. If you do disconnect the storm runoff pipe…. have your main sewer line snaked every couple of years or you risk gunk pile-up inside the line, especially if you use “flushable” kitty liter or “disposability bio degradable” baby wipes, etc.

One inch of rain produces 3 gallons of water on your roof. So a typical 1000 sqft roof produces 3000 gallons of water in a typical rainstorm. That’s a lot of water to direct into the backyard, even worse, into your basement.

Ever wonder why the inside of your basement walls at the back of the house flake and peel away… it’s because the damp from the backyard (yes even under the cement patio) filters it’s way to your foundation.

I feel you do disconnect the storm runoff, dig a proper dry well… however you will quickly find you can’t really dig the proper size dry well to take 100% of he typical brownstone runoff.

Sorry, just thought i’d add……

A properly cleaned 4” downspout connecting to a 4” cast iron main waste pipe (again property maintained) should handle 100% of a typical brownstones runoff.

If there’s a water backup, snake the pipe first, BEFORE redirecting the runoff into barrels or the backyard. You will have to call a plumber because the electric snakes available at home depot etc will only snake up to a 3” pipe.

It’s a very easy job with the correct tool.

If your buying a 100 year old brownstone, probably a good idea to snake the main waste pipe anyway.
