Digital locks for original brownstone doors?
We would like to change our parlor level exterior and interior double door entry locks from keys to a digital system. We have sought help from the few locksmiths we know of who install digital locks. The problem seems to be that these old doors are so thick that existing locks made for modern doors don’t work. Has anyone solved this problem? Thanks for any ideas you can provide.

Have you looked at August locks? They sit on the back of existing front locks…

Hi there! We have installed numerous digital locks. It really depends what brand you prefer. Any hardware can be modified. All it takes – a skilled carpenter who is willing to make an extra step.

bob, here is the problem with seating a locking in the wood on the inside. when you change that lock you have to put a big scar plate on there.

bob, the problem is the length of the through bolts. if you are suggesting they make a bore to seat the inside of the lock, i have seen that done, but that is just sloppy workmanship when all one needs is longer bolts and a longer tail piece and most manufacturers make these parts but the shops don’t always stock them. by the way, if you call a locksmith shop and ask for a “thick door kit’ for one of these locks and they do not know what you are talking about, it is time to look for another locksmith, at least in brooklyn. i can see someone in the ‘burbs not knowing what a thick door kit is-

Couldn’t they mortice the lock in on the inside?

YES, i did a lock for a man in manhattan last week. he ordered the lock and had me put it in and i do not know the brand (it was off the net) but we had no issues and his doors are 3″ thick. I can contact him and will as he wants me to do more work.
also, i want to get digital locks for my house and the next time i visit my wholesaler, i will see what works with what. i can even call him but have work to do now.
this is me and all i do is work on are doors: www.thetinkerswagon.com. also, i have done a dozen or so digital locks and they are pathetically easy to install, i just did one on monroe st for a door i rebuilt, but i have to still learn about the brands and what brands will work on the thick doors. if you email me and push me, i will do just that, especially if you ask me to do the install. but if you said you might install it yourself, i would still help you only because for every person i help on here, 5 more call me.
