Definitive guide to hanging on brownstone walls?
Why don’t you just get a tension bar bike rack and spare the walls altogether? You can find some where (depending on the ceiling height) you can get 2 adult bikes and a kids bike to go vertical. Good luck.

I recently saw this article that does a pretty good job of explaining how to hang heavier things in most scenarios: https://www.finewoodworking.com/2021/07/19/choosing-the-right-wall-anchors
It is really useful but I’m not always sure exactly what kind of walls we are dealing with. For example, in our garden floor the walls clearly aren’t plaster but I can’t find any studs either. Does anyone know of a great way to be sure what you are dealing with?

More importantly, what are you hanging?
Drilling into old plaster is dicey at best as plaster becomes unkeyed and falls inside the wall. Drywall can be safer. And plaster on brick might crumble anyway requiring you to either drill with much smaller bits or pack the enlarged hole with epoxy and press an anchor into it. If you can catch a wood stud now and then, better.
It will take some knocking on walls and experience to know what you are dealing with. If it hurts your knuckle, its plaster or plaster on brick. A little give, drywall. If you convey what you wish to hang, cabinets for instance, I might be able to help some more.

I’ve found that plaster on wood lath can support fairly heavy pictures, and BBC even Lar he e mirrors, as long as your screws or nails don’t hit the gaps between the wood lath strips. Floret brand hooks are very good. They’re the same as the original Ook hooks before the manufacture of the latter was switched from Germany to China. (The Chinese hardened steel nails break unexpectedly—I lost a cherished antique print when a Chinese-made Ook hook failed because the nail snapped ).

do not drive a nail into plaster without first drilling a pilot hole.

That’s good advice in general Steve, but pilot holes aren’t needed for the skinny sharp hardened steel nails used with Floriat or Ook hooks.

I was just looking for general advice but what made me think of it was hanging some Steadyrack bike racks. A bit hard to totally tell how much effective weight will result.

ok. so in this case you can cut a piece of pine a bit larger than the mounts on the bike racks. you can use multiple screws and anchors to spread the load out wider than it would be if you used just the mounts on the racks and you can try to catch a stud. then mount the rack to the wood.
also, when you try to pass through a piece of 1 by wood (3/4″ thick), the screws that come with the kits the hardware store sells are too short. usually they are # 10 or 12 screws by 1.5″ long. or maybe less. ditch those and get some about over 2″ long. be careful using long screws where there may be a water pipe, especially a modern soft copper one.
when i do this in a nicer home, i would run the edge of the wood through the router and finish it nicely.
i am not putting my name forth to do this –
