Cost of brownstone deck

Back in 2008, I paid about $21,000 to Sketch and Hammer for a code compliant steel and wood deck that wasn’t filed.

We are looking to add a deck to the back of our brownstone in Bed Stuy. The scope would include a 20′ x 6′ steel deck, railing, and a steel staircase to the garden. Does anyone have thoughts on what this should cost, including the design work? We were told by one contractor $10,000 and another $17,000, not including design. Now we have a detailed proposal including design for $32,000. This seems very high. Thank you for any insights!

I’m in the process of doing this right now. I did all design work and drawings. Here are some ballpark numbers ~$1500 Structural engineer review/ signing and sealing, ~$2000 Expeditor fees, $1000 soil bore test, $700 Asbestos inspection, ~$3000 for footings and some masonry work, expecting ~$1500 for an energy code compliant door for deck access, and expecting $12000-$15000 for steel installation from an ironworker I’ve worked with often. I’ve spent endless hours on drawings as it’s my own place, but I’d guess at 40 hours to prepare a proper filing set.
