coronavirus - how will construction work be affected??

We were hoping to begin renovation on our townhouse in the next few weeks… but since this work is “nonessential” does that mean we have to wait?

Also, we have not gotten official approval of our plans from DOB but were hoping to get that as soon as we give in our ACP5/ACP 21 after our recent abatement… Does anyone know if the DOB will be closed or have limited hours, and how that will affect our ability to get our plans approved and pull permits?

tough call…the new license may want to rip everything open to verify the rough inspection…conversely your gc may flake out regardless of however much time you give him…try contacting the license holders directly and working out a plan with them…chances are your gc has jerked them around as well

I understand. At this point do I wait 6 months for GC to finish or get a new plumber and be able to finish a month post Covid. We have a bathroom (finishing/fixtures left), a tankless boiler install to be completed and a 3 radiators to be installed (piping is already done). The roughing is passed and everything upstairs is all done.

chris is spot on…anyone superseding your permits will increase your budget on plumbing or any other trade by 30 to 60 percent… how do they know that the work that they are taking over was done to code?… .. It may also entail opening walls on what you thought was a job minutes from completion… you have to understand that a sign off on a job means putting your lisence on the line

You can find someone to take over; superseding is a simple process. That being said, it will likely alter your budget. That is the part where most homeowners decide to stick to the original plan.

Not to hijack this thread but perhaps other people may be in a similar situation. I am curious what one should do and could use some sound advice. I made the mistake of paying contractor and now he’s been dragging it out for months sending one worker. Now he’s pulled the one worker (he thought no work was allowed). I’m now waiting to hear from him on reinstating the one worker. I want to fire the contractor but everyone has said it’s difficult to get someone to take over the plumbing and close it out. We are so close to finishing. Even with one worker on site (electrician or plumber etc), we’d finish in 4-6 weeks.. But I’m nervous about how to get someone to take over the plumbing permit… Also I believe there is not much one can do to get one’s money back other than go to court and up to 20k from the DCA.

Yeah, this is rough. Most of our jobs shut down right away. We’ve got one that has reduced to one worker, working alone, which is allowed by the executive order. We are discussing this with other contractors to see if there is any way they can get any work done this way, or if it just doesn’t make any sense to try.

As an architect and owner of a small firm, this is posing an existential crisis. We are looking for ways to continue to serve our clients and keep their projects moving.

We are mid-reno, doing everything by the book and our construction company has stopped work and say that are doing so because they have to at non-emergency residential sites like ours. I was expecting this. It’s annoying, but I understand why it’s happening.

Construction is halted as of today. However, I would proceed with getting whatever permits you need so you can start when the ban is eventually lifted.

As mentioned to the OP, if you can wait, I would. There’s too much uncertainty and LPC and DoB are increasing backlog.
Even before Cuomo’s order, you could keep people working in your renovation, but it was morally questionable.
