Please tell me about cornice restoration and replacement! My wood + sheet metal cornice is in need of work, and I’m wondering if it might be better to get a new one–maybe fiberglass? The trouble of scaffolding and whatnot makes me really inclined to do it all now and not have to revisit it for as many years as possible! I’m really surprised not to see more discussion of cornices in the forum. What have you all done and who do you recommend?? And how much did it cost?
Thanks.

unless the structure is totally rotten it can be fixed and it’s not such a big deal.
They suspend a hanging scaffolding from your roof, and within 2 days it’s good to go for the next 15 years.
A new fiberglass cornice costs a lot more (I heard it’s about 1000 per foot installed)

Make sure the hanging scaffold is erected by a licensed rigger. The rigger doesn’t have to do the work but the scaffold needs to be safely installed. Agree it is better to repair. The fiberglas cornices can deteriorate in sunlight over time.

I just had my cornice repaired and repainted as part of a larger facade renovation. The cornice part took maybe a week, to scrape off the old paint, replace a couple of corbels that were damaged/missing, and then apply a couple coats of paint. We waited a bit for the corbels to be fabricated while the rest of the job was moving along, but it didn’t’ take long (some company in Michigan i believe the contractor told me). Now it looks perfect and you’d never know any of it wasn’t 100% original. I could never recommend getting a fiberglass cornice. I don’t know that I’ve seen one, but as a general rule, they don’t make them like they used to, and so if you are able to repair what is there you will be much happier. Modern materials do tend to be more expensive, and perhaps require less maintenance over the years, but I feel like it will look fake and probably not come close to the details of the original.

The total cost of just the cornice work was $3,300. This included 1500 to notify the DOB and install 2 point suspended scaffolding (which basically looked like a window washers cart secured by two ropes with hooks at the end, wrapped around my chimney at the back of the house), plus 1800 to scrape the old paint off, 1 coat primer, 2 coats semigloss black paint, and repairing the two busted corbels. The company i used was Rahmann Contracting. I can definitely recommend them for their work on my cornice, I’m very happy with the results!

i had mine repainted and the contractor used two point scaffolding. and bent.my cornice (it is metal). there are some i have seen that proudly advertise that they use a lift instead of the scaffold, wish i would have gone that route. just an fyi

Agree it’s probably better to repair what is there than replace for just for the record, I heard it’s about $3,000 total for parts and labor to install an off-the-shelf fiberglass cornice.

Well! I got back a quote, and it’s for $8,000 to repair (one corner is damaged, and I asked for it to be fixed/reinforced, which will include some wood work and reinforcement) and refinish the cornice including $3200 for a boom lift. I also asked for a quote for an all new one (wood and metal), and the price from the same contractor was for $34,500!!! Ummm… Does anyone else have a good contractor recommendation for this??

hmm.. why not try a quote from Amin Home Improvement. Also on my list from a previous rec is Patrick 646-945-7315, i think he uses a boom lift. Three bids is probablly appropriate for this job considering there appears to be extensive repair which can add days to the job.

Hi Omatokai, could you please share which contractors gave you quotes and who you ended up working with? We’re gathering quotes right now for our wood cornice repair and it’s very confusing.
