Converting old radiators to electric

I’m considering heating systems for an old frame house. Has anyone converted cast-iron radiators to electric (for example, via the EcoRad company)? My contractor is talking up heat pumps but I really dislike forced air heating.

I’m going through this with a good repeat client in Fort Greene. This person’s gas boiler broke and so was determined to replace the whole system with electric heat. It doesn’t work. I stepped out of it and said “There are people who sell this work and advocate for it intelligently. Let them guide you through it.” I just got an email this week from the client saying (paraphrasing) “Converting doesn’t work in this part of the world.” Considering what we pay for electric, and (in my opinion) where it actually comes from and how it’s made, and how much of it you have to consume to create the 70° rise on some days between indoor and outdoor temperatures (0° outside to 70° inside)…We’re just not there yet.
Keep in mind, when we make air conditioning, we try to close the gap on a 20°-30° temperature differential between indoor and outdoor temperatures. That’s roughly 90° outside to 70° inside. How much does that cost you in summer?
Heat pumps aren’t exactly 100% “electric heat”, but they are when temps really drop, and even when temps are mild they do use a lot of electri cal power. This is a difficult thing we’re all trying to do by getting rid of fossil fuels. There’s a lot of inexpensive energy in a measure of natural gas.

Thanks that’s really helpful. I hated the swings in temperature with the forced air system in my old place, which was poorly insulated–as soon as it cycled off you could feel the cold creeping back in. (Plus it was always too hot on the ground floor and too cold at the top.) Good to know the split system is a bit different–and that the cost won’t be more than gas plus electric bills would be.

Our experience has been that with a well-insulated house, with good windows, split system heat pumps are sufficient for heating and cooling. They do not feel like traditional forced air, in that they run more often, at lower speed and much lower air temperature. Traditional forced air systems literally burn the air so it’s really hot and dry. This creates big swings in temperature and very dry air. Split systems can avoid all of this.

The downside is that they do run often, so they use a significant amount of electricity. It’s not nearly as much as electric resistance heat, more like the equivalent of running another fridge for each air handler. You’ll spend more on electricity than you do now, but less than the combined cost of electricity and gas/oil, especially if you can eliminate gas/oil altogether.

i tend to advise my clients to stick with a gas boiler and radiation with a secondary heating tier of a heat pump….that said the next wave of green boilers may be electric high temp heat pump boilers, but it will definitely take a few years to reach the US market

Yes, that’s the dream! But I’m seeing people on here saying that heat pumps don’t warm as well as radiators. Though I do plan to insulate well since the house is decrepit and needs to be gutted anyway, so maybe it would work fine.

Following along — not burning fossil fuels, what a novel idea!

In practice, heat pumps may be the better way to go.

It is like the Radiator Box idea…amazing idea in theory but feel apart once it hit the practicality phase

New York City is one of the most Radiator Dense Areas in the whole world…and I have seen the Electric Conversion done one time in our 7,800 visits since I have worked at my current company.
It is great in theory but unreal in cost for entry and utility.

My thought is to get rid of gas, which seems like the way of the future. I’m planning to put solar panels on the roof which should offset a good portion of my electric bill. But maybe the installation / conversion expense is prohibitive.
