It is cheaper both financially & peace of mind to buy a two family if that is what you want.

was the house was converted to 2 family without permits and now you want to get inspected and have the DOB issue a new CofO? if so I do not think that is how it works.

No it’s a 1 family we are in the process of purchasing. Wondering if we might be able to convert it to a 2 family down the road.

It won’t be easy and will take a lot of time and money. My architect told me getting a new CO can take 2+ yrs and DOB is very strict during the inspection process.

You’re going to also need an Alt1 permit to do this. If you have infinite time and money (and aren’t relying on the rental income to pay your mortgage) I’m sure it can be done, but it’s going to be a process. We converted the other way, from a 2-fam to a single-fam, which is “faster” and the final inspections/CoO process was roughly 5 months. We were living in the house at the time so there wasn’t such a huge rush, but I don’t know if it could be faster than that. 2 years just to get a CoO seems insane assuming the home passes all inspections.

I presume there are no single-family restrictions
