I think you should give him the opportunity to do the right thing.

My wife and I, are having our bedroom and master bathroom renovated. The contractor was supposed cover the floor before beginning, We left our home for two weeks. When we returned he had not covered the floor and the floor is covered in debris and sheetrock mud. I brought this up and he has the deer in head lights look. So now that the floor needs to be refinished, should I just take it out of the last payment or give him thew opportunity to do the “the right thing”. Thanks looking forward to your responses.

you need to get an assessment of the floor and a cost proposal for refinishing. then you can take that to the contractor. you might not want the guy who was so incautious about your floor in the first place being the one to repair the damage.

A picture might help. Debris and sheetrock mud doesn’t sound that scary to me. After a good cleaning, can you really assess how bad it is.

contractor here. see what green thinker says. in years past i have done a lot over unprotected floors knowing that so long as we do not DRAG anything sharp over them or not spill solvents or paint on them (and even latex paint on an oil based floor is not an issue if handled properly), they will not be damaged. have them remove the stuff with out dragging wood and things. have them sweep or use a vacuum with a HEPA filter. then have them begin mopping. lumps of drywall compound will not come off in the first go and they will be running mops over this quite a few times but they will get there.

if they scratched the floor: 1. do not let them address it and 2. so long as the scratches do not cut through to the wood, the floor can be screened and a coat of like finish can be applied. only an experienced person should do this as most of these “experts” running around today do not know what it means to “tack” something off.
