Connecting two floors costs

thanks! actually the garden floor is a street level and it comes with a cellar.

Hi, we are looking at a 3 floor house currently configured as 3 apartments. We are considering living in two and renting the top apartment. Wondering how much would it cost to build an interior stair to connect the 2 floors as the building stairs would be for access to the third floor. The house is renovated already. Thanks Bessie

There’s a big range depending on whether or not the adjoining rooms / hallways need to be reconfigured, the structural upgrades and the materials used. If you’re not modifying the surroundings you could probably get a basic wood stair done for around $10K including new header, gwb, paint and floor touchups.

In MHO three floor houses work better as a garden rental & upper duplex with a deck on the back for easy access to the garden from the parlor floor. The tenant has their own street entrance from under the stoop and there is no wasted square footage of public hallways. As well as no tenants walking over head + you get better light on the upper floors.
You can still configure the garden floor so that you have access to the cellar. And no expense of extra staircases or privacy issues.

The garden rental is definitely the preferred scheme, but it sounds like OP was trying to do as little work as possible on the house.
