Code for window gates in brownstone

I’m in the midst of a refi. The question has come up re:window gates. Do we have to cut and get latches or are they grandfathered in?

The appraiser was the organization that red flagged the gates. I explained that the gates are original to the building and they should be more mindful of rules for historical homes and districts.

I most likely will remove them and then replace them. I just needed to know if there was a specific mandate for historical homes and districts. Thanks much for the info.

Can you request a reappraisal? I secured both a mortgage and a refi without any issues and have garden level original gates. I am not in a landmark district, but it doesn’t sound like that’s the issue here.

I have had this experience. My refi would not process without completely removing the exterior window gates on the garden level. My building is in a historic district. It was recommended to me to remove them for the inspection and replace them thereafter.

The appraiser made the reference to the original gates. Most brownstones have two egress, like mine. I’m just not understanding why they don’t get it. I don’t want to ruin my gates or have the expense of putting on safety latches. LPC has passed the buck onto the DOB.

Which window gates are you referring to? The garden floor front original historic ones are general accepted by any Insurance company that routinely insures historic “Brownstones”.
